Possible Game Idea. You Want In?

Posted by OneDude20 - July 6th, 2021

Hey there NG users!

My name is OneDude. I'm an 16 y/o artist here on Newgrounds! I know most if not all of you have no clue who I am, but I'm making this post with the intentions of assembling a team! If you don't wanna read the post, the TL;DR is that I wanted to make an RPG that runs here on NG. if you DO wanna help out, give feedback, or something else, reply to this post or DM me. Below are some details!

The Plan:

Its a fairly rough idea, but I'll try my best to explain with no visuals:

I wanted to create an RPG that runs entirely in flash, and right here on Newgrounds. The game will feature typical RPG mechanics (different team members, turn based fighting, etc.), however there are no primary team members that you must use for the whole game. Think of Pokémon, where you have a set number of team members on you at a time but can switch out from a pc to use others. Sounds redundant already, right?

Where the game would stick out from other RPGs would lie in its visual presentation and its focus on strategy. I envision thick black outlines, bright color pallets, and accentuated features on the characters. Its hard to explain correctly without sounding like an out of touch poser, but for reference take a look at some of my art (not a plug, I swear lol).

Its strategic upper hand would be in the form of a grid like battlefield. 3 members are allowed on the 3 x 5 field, and can be moved around either to focus on offense, defense, or avoid an oncoming enemy attack. Some characters also have synergies and skills that benefit other characters and allow them to work in tandem. Other characters might have quirks like taking up 2 spots on the grid or making certain tiles boost status effects. Examples of this can be found in few games like South Park: The Fractured But Whole (kinda), and one other that I'll save for the end since its a big inspiration for this potential project.

Writing wise, it'd probably be a comedic, yet strong story. Plot points tie into big moments throughout the game, starting and ending after boss fights or critical quests. There isn't much I have here yet since I've been focused on the other bits of the game, however I wanted the central theme of the game to be based around the 5 senses, as well as the brain. Idk how to explain a reason for why I did. Moral might be coming to understand yourself through your senses? Its still very, very rough haha.

The Inspiration:

I might sound like a pathetic loser, but the main inspiration for this project is the Yokai Watch franchise. I played the first few mainline games back to back and i never noticed how much serious charm and dedication was packed into every corner of them. Totally underrated. Big ups to Pokémon and (obviously) Earthbound for the inspiration too for laying the groundwork!

Wanna be Crewmates?

So yeah! That's basically all I've got. Of course, I cannot do any of this alone! I've tried coding and making music but I can't get the hang of either lol. I can definitely provide some of the art and assets, though in reality I'll need some help with all 3 aspects and much much more. That's why I'm assembling a team! (NOTE: Sorry, but I can't hire anyone. My money situation is pretty odd as a minor and cant really transfer money that easily, yk? I want this to be a group effort!)

I also need to add, I don't know if this any of this can be accomplished within flash. If the project ever reaches such a large state, we might need to look into other ways of going about this. At the very least I hope a small demo could be produced and put on the site for everyone to play!

What else am I missing? What do I need to factor in? Feel free to add your thoughts in a reply below!

P.S: happy birthday Newgrounds!
